PANAJI- The general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Mr G R Ravi has said that 3G services would be made available in Goa in near future, even as he added that the government owned telecom corporation has ambitious expansion plans in the state.
Addressing a press conference on Friday afternoon, Mr Ravi said that that Wi Max (wireless broadband) services would also be started shortly.
Goa would thus become the second state in the country to have such a facility. The WIMAX.BTS has already been installed and final testing of the same is underway, he added.
Stating that the total number of working broadband connections in the state was 21,500, he further said that there was also a plan to further expand the broadband connectivity in all the exchanges in
the state.
Mr Ravi also said that the number of BSNL mobile users was over one lakh and that the mobile tower network would be further expanded by adding another 100 towers in the new financial year. In the current year 40 towers were erected in different parts of the state largely due to co-operation of the people and the panchayats.
The BSNL general manager said that the corporation was still facing problems in getting the no objection certificates in some areas particularly in Betul, Chorao, Khanaguinim, Nadora, Margao, Navelim, Gogol etc and hoped that people would co-operate with the BSNL in in expansion plans.
He went on to add that people were unaware of the fact the mobile towers were not as harmful as they thought and that corporation officials have been attending the meetings of the people where there were objections for setting up the towers and explaining them about the safety of the towers.
He said that the mobile phones that people carry on their person were more harmful than the towers.
Mr Ravi also said that BSNL has launched various new schemes and tariffs for its users like new SIM cards, attractive landline plans and also mobile service plans.
