PANAJI - The Leader of the Opposition and senior state leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mr Manohar Parrikar underwent heart corrective procedures for minor heart blockade at the Apollo Victor Hospitals, Margao on Tuesday morning after he complained of chest pain. Mr Parrikar is recovering in the hospital and his condition is said to be stable.
The interventional cardiologist at the Apollo Victor Hospitals, Dr Uday Khanolkar, later told ‘The Navhind Times’ that Mr Parrikar arrived at the hospital with chest discomfort, having suffered a mild heart attack some 4 to 5 hours earlier. “We performed an emergency angiography on him followed by angioplasty,” he informed, adding that Mr Parrikar would need to stay in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit for the next 2 to 3 days until his heart stabilises to normal, and could be discharged only after one week.
Speaking further, Dr Khanolkar said that Mr Parrikar would be ready to carry out his normal duties only after 2 to 4 weeks. “He came to the hospital right in time for the treatment and hence the long-term effects of our medication would prove to be good,” the noted interventional cardiologist predicted.
Mr Audhut Parrikar, the elder brother of Mr Parrikar speaking to this daily said that the condition of Mr Parrikar was stable and he was recovering. “I am presently at the hospital,” he said, adding that the heart problem could have been caused because of the stress generated during the recent Lok Sabha election campaign.
The state BJP president, Mr Shripad Naik reacting to the heart ailment of Mr Parrikar said that the strenuous Lok Sabha election campaign in sultry summer could have been the cause of the illness. “My party, party office bearers, party members and all party workers besides myself wish a speedy and successful recovery for Mr Parrikar,” he added.
