PANAJI- The Corporation of the City of Panaji on Thursday made it clear that it would, under no circumstances, lift the garbage generated in the city unless a proper garbage disposal site is found.
The Mayor, Ms Carolina Po, speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’ said that she discussed the issue of garbage disposal with the residents around the Campal ground, Thursday morning, without reaching any conclusion. “They will meet me again Friday morning to discuss the issue,” she said.
It may be recalled that the YMCA and the CCP had reached an agreement that composting and recycling would be allowed at a site near the Campal ground as long as there would be no dumping of garbage and the stench would be taken care of. However, a vehicle belonging to the Corporation was seen dumping wet waste and dead animals in the area, earlier this week, resulting in the residents sending back all the garbage carrier trucks of the civic body.
Meanwhile, the city has been virtually overflowing with heaps of wet garbage, resulting in unbearable stench emanating from them. The daily sweeping of roads too has stopped. The absence of rains is the only saving grace; the rain water otherwise forcing the garbage to flood the roads.
Ms Po, speaking further, said that the Corporation on Thursday had sent its engineer to various wards in the city for identifying a place to dispose the city garbage. “However, the locations suggested by the respective councillors were not feasible mainly as they had no access to vehicles,” she added.
The Mayor also informed that she discussed the issue with the Minister for Urban Development, Mr Joaquim Alemao on Wednesday, who in turn, advised her to utilise the Bainguinim site for disposing the city waste. The particular site has been already handed over to the CCP and is lying vacant since past 7 months.
Informing that the Corporation, during past 7 months, has been preparing a detailed project report as regards setting up of a solid waste management plant at the Bainguinim site as well as discussing the same with the consultants, Ms Po said that a compound wall would have to be constructed around the site. Interestingly, any kind of construction in Bainguinim would require a NoC from the local village panchayat, which is against the very project.
The people should now understand that the CCP is facing a genuine problem and will not be able to lift the garbage accumulated in Panaji, unless a suitable site is found to dispose the same,” she reiterated, showing helplessness when pointed out that the situation could trigger off an epidemic in the city.
