the young director of 'Yousuf', which is the opening film at the South Asian Film Festival 2009, said that film production in Maldives is still in nascent stage, with only 5 to 6 movies being produced in the scenic island nation.Ms Nahula, who arrived in Goa on the eve of the SAFF 2009, interacting with the media said that Maldives has a three-hundred-and-fifty thousand odd population, and with such limited population, the country cannot afford to have a major film industry. “Even marketing of films produced in Maldives, at the international level is yet to see the light of the day,” she added. However, the Maldives film industry is growing, with lot of investment arriving for our films, Ms Nahula informed. As regards ‘Yousuf’, the director of the film said, “It is a story of Yousuf, a hearing impaired poor young islander, who survives in life and manages to live with normal people.”
