PANAJI- St Sebastian Sports Club Fatorda scored a hard fought 5-3 tie breaker victory over Goa Velha Sports Club to move into the semi -finals of T B Da Cunha Cup 2008 soccer tournament, organised by Dr T B Da Cunha Association at Cansaulim Sports Complex on Friday. Both teams were tied 1 - 1 at full time.
In the ensuing tie-breaker St Sebastian Fatorda boys kept their calm and scored through Antonio Fernandes, Cliff Baretto, Stanley Dias and Bobby Crasto.
The try of Jose Norhona was saved. For Goa Velha, Melroy D’Silva and Joy Gonsalves scored the penalties while those of Joyner Lourenco and Anthony D’Souza were saved.
In the first half both teams were equally matched as the Goa Velha boys combined well with Joston Lourenco, Joyner Lourenco and Royden Camelo showing good understanding on the right flank. They, however, lacked shooting power.
In the 10th minute of the first half, Goa Velha’s Melroy D’Silva found the lurking Joy Gonsalves, who moved into the box, throwing the Fatorda defense into panic. However, his shot missed the target.
Fatorda also attacked but their forward Seby Barbosa was pulled up for off side on a number of occasions by assistant referee Franky Fernandes thus bringing all the good work of the medios to naught.At the end of half time both teams settled for a goalless draw.
Early in the second half, Goa Velha boys took the lead through an opportunistic goal scored by striker Adolf Caido who went for a tough tackle with Fatorda defender Jose Norhona and the resulting loose ball was trapped by him and scored in style beating Terrence Barbosa in the Fatorda goal (1 – 0). Goa Velha could have increased their lead, however, Joyner Lourenco who was put in the clear by an intelligent chip by Joy Gonsalves shot over the cross bar.
Fatorda brought in central medio Bobby Crasto whose fresh legs snatched the initiative from the Goa Velha team and he sent clever passes to both flanks.
One such move through the centre found Fatorda’s Clifton Dias captializing on the misunderstanding between the stoppers of Goa Velha and he succeeded in beating Nicholas D’Silva in the Goa Velha goal to level the scores at 1-1.
At the fag end of the match Goa Velha earned a free-kick on top of the box as Adolf, who took it sent it high and wide.In the semi - finals of the tournament, St Sebastian Sports Club Fatorda will take on Verna Sports Club on October 20.
